Making a GIF with AI is two moves. First you generate a short looping clip from a text prompt, which is where the AI part happens. Then you export that clip to the GIF format, which is a file conversion and costs nothing. We did both on August 26, 2026. The clip charged 5 credits and took about 160 seconds. The conversion took seconds and taught us more about GIF than the generation did.

The source loop, before any GIF conversion

The clip, then the conversion, with the file sizes

The prompt we ran

"A paper-craft fox walks through a folded-paper forest, handmade stop-motion style, gentle camera push, short continuous loop". Square aspect, 480p tier, 5 seconds. Craft styles like paper, clay and cut felt hold up better at GIF colour depth than photoreal ones do.

What we got

A 5.088 second clip at 640 by 640, 24 frames per second, 121 frames, about 1.46 MB. An origami fox with an orange body, a white tail tip and dark brown paws, walking across a soft cream floor through folded green paper conifers, with layered paper mountains behind.

Clip lengths are fixed at 5, 10 or 15 seconds

We asked for 4 seconds first and the request was refused before anything was charged, naming the three lengths it accepts. For a GIF, 5 is almost always the right answer.

The generation is cheap, the format is not

Converting that 1.46 MB clip at its native 640 by 640 and 24 frames per second produced a 27.4 MB GIF. Same animation, nearly 19 times the bytes, because GIF stores whole frames from a limited colour palette instead of compressing motion between them.

Two settings do all the shrinking

Width and frame rate. At 480 pixels wide and 12 frames per second the same loop came out at 8.5 MB. At 320 pixels wide, 10 frames per second and a 128 colour palette it came out at 2.8 MB. Nothing else moved the number nearly as much.

Only export to GIF when you have to

GIF is the right choice for a chat window, a forum post or an email signature that will not play video. Anywhere a video tag works, ship the MP4 instead. At 1.46 MB it was smaller than every GIF we made from it, including the 320 pixel one.

5 credits and about 160 seconds for the animation. The conversion was free, and it multiplied the file size by nearly 19 at full size.

5 credits for the animation

1 credit per second at the 480p tier and 2 credits per second at 720p. Our square 5 second loop charged 5 credits.

About 160 seconds, timed

Measured on August 26, 2026 from submission to the finished file. Long enough to write the next prompt while you wait.

The export costs nothing

Converting an existing clip to GIF is a local file operation. No credits, no second job, and you can re-export at different sizes as many times as you like.

How It Works

Two steps to the animation, one to the file:

1

Write a prompt built to repeat

One subject, one simple movement, a plain background, and a style with flat colour. We asked for a paper-craft fox walking through a folded-paper forest in a handmade stop-motion style, and got a clean square animation on the first try.

2

Generate short and square

5 seconds at the 480p tier in a 1:1 frame. That charged 5 credits and returned 640 by 640 at 24 frames per second, which is more than enough source for any GIF.

3

Export at a size that will actually send

Convert the clip to GIF with a generated colour palette, then pull the width and the frame rate down until the file fits where it is going. Ours landed at 2.8 MB at 320 pixels and 10 frames per second.

Common Questions

Everything you need to know about AI GIF Loops

How do I make a GIF with AI?

Generate a short looping clip from a text prompt, then export that clip to GIF. The AI step is the clip. Ours was 5 seconds, charged 5 credits and finished in about 160 seconds on August 26, 2026.

What does an AI GIF cost?

The clip costs 1 credit per second at the 480p tier, so 5 credits for a 5 second loop, or 2 credits per second at 720p. The conversion to GIF afterwards is free.

Why is my GIF so much bigger than the video?

GIF stores each frame from a limited colour palette rather than compressing the motion between frames. Our 1.46 MB clip became a 27.4 MB GIF at its native size. Cutting the width to 320 pixels and the rate to 10 frames per second brought it to 2.8 MB.

How long can the clip be?

5, 10 or 15 seconds. A request for 4 seconds was rejected before anything was charged. For a GIF, 5 seconds is usually as long as you want anyway, since every extra second is stored as whole frames.

What prompts make good loops?

Simple, repeating motion against a plain background, in a flat or handmade style. Ours was a paper-craft fox walking through a folded-paper forest. Craft and cel styles survive the reduced GIF palette better than photoreal scenes with soft gradients.

Can I generate the clip from the API?

Yes. POST to /api/v1/models/seedance-2-mini/run with your API key, the prompt, the resolution and a duration of 5, 10 or 15. Convert the returned file to GIF on your own machine afterwards.
