How the dragon prompt sorted the three models
1. Seedream 5, 2.5 credits, about 50 seconds
Seedream 5 was the only model that answered with something you could put on a cover. A large teal dragon grips a round moss covered tower with its wings spread across the top third of the frame, smoke curling from its jaws, its tail looping down over the stone arch bridge where a knight with a blue plume is walking. Behind that sit two mountain ranges and a misted forest, with the dusk sky breaking warm at the horizon. Scale texture, wet stone and drifting mist all hold up at full size. It came back at 3136 by 1344 with no size setting from us, which is the widest file in the test by a long way and the reason you would pay 2.5 credits for it. Skip it if you are still exploring compositions. At two and a half times the price of the other two and five times the wait of Flux Dev, this is the model you use once you know what you want, not the one you use to find out.
2. Flux Dev, 1 credit, about 10 seconds
Flux Dev was the value pick and it is not far behind. Ours shows a lankier serpentine dragon wound twice around a tall ivy covered tower, its head turned out over a golden sunrise sky, with a knight in a red cape standing on the arch bridge at lower left and misted peaks on both sides. The palette is sage, stone grey and gold, and the whole thing reads as a soft matte painting rather than a rendered still. Composition is genuinely good, and at about 10 seconds you can run five variations while Seedream 5 finishes one. Output was 1024 by 1024. Skip it if you need detail to survive a crop. The dragon body is smooth where Seedream 5 gave us individual scales, and a square 1024 file will not stretch across a banner without an upscale pass first.
3. Kling Image, 1 credit, about 75 seconds
Kling Image answered in a completely different register. Ours is a flat cel styled illustration: a bright mint green dragon coiled around a broken gothic tower, hard god rays cutting down through cloud, stars in the upper sky, and a knight on horseback crossing the arch bridge at the lower left. Line work is clean and the colour is blocked in rather than blended, so it looks like poster art or a card illustration. If that graphic look is what you are after, it is the only one of the three that produced it, and it costs the same 1 credit as Flux Dev. Skip it if you are iterating or if you want painted texture. About 75 seconds is the slowest turnaround in this test, and Flux Dev handed us a richer painting for the same credit in roughly a seventh of the time.
