Keeper at the Threshold

A lone figure in a bright yellow oilskin pauses in the doorway of a white-painted lighthouse, one boot already on the wet gallery. Rain slants hard across the frame; the sea below is a dark, restless plane. Rust streaks the brick like old blood, and the iron railings are pitted and brown, their curves leading the eye from the storm toward the man. Light is low and cold—dusk filtered through cloud—so the yellow coat becomes the only warm note, a small lantern of color against slate water and whitewash.
