Ravens Beneath The Moon

Two ravens occupy a ruined gothic threshold at night, their silhouettes cut against a vast, pale moon. One bird perches on a moss-draped fragment of carved stone; the other balances on a bare, reaching limb. A circular stone arch, half-swallowed by hanging lichen and skeletal branches, frames the lunar disk like a forgotten oculus. Behind them, a second column and a lattice of dead trees recede into blue fog, suggesting a chapel or cloister long reclaimed by the wood. Light is almost entirely lunar: a cool, milky radiance that bleaches the sky and leaves the forest in layered indigo. Highlights catch only the birds’ beaks, the wet sheen of moss, and the worn edges of masonry. The palette is tightly restricted to slate, pewter, and near-black, with the moon as the single warm-cool exception. Atmosphere is thick but not opaque; distant trunks dissolve without losing their graphic, calligraphic line. The composition is a deliberate oval—arch, moon, and interlocking boughs—that funnels the eye toward the silent confrontation of the two birds.
