Rain Rings Over Koi

A still, dark pond sits enclosed by rounded boulders thick with living moss, their velvety green surfaces mirroring the overcast canopy above. A single raindrop has just struck the water, sending a perfect sequence of concentric rings outward across the glassy surface. Below the disturbance, a pale koi with a broad orange saddle glides slowly, its form half-dissolved in the reflections of surrounding foliage. Soft, even daylight filters through the garden, eliminating harsh shadows and saturating every mossy contour. The palette is almost entirely cool: deep forest greens, charcoal water, and muted leaf reflections, interrupted only by the koi’s warm pigment. Ferns and broad-leaved plants fringe the upper corners, their silhouettes repeating in the pond’s lower half. The mood is one of hushed observation, as if time has paused between two drops. The composition is tightly framed yet spatially generous, drawing the eye first to the expanding rings, then to the fish, then to the enveloping moss. It evokes traditional Japanese garden photography and contemporary nature cinema, privileging stillness, texture, and the quiet geometry of water.
