Starlight Motel at Dusk

A low desert motel stretches under a sky that cools from tangerine at the horizon to deep indigo overhead, the first stars already visible. A tall neon arrow in pink script reads Starlight Motel; beneath it a green VACANCY box glows against the fading light. The office sits at the left of a long stucco wing, its open door spilling warm interior light onto a turquoise 1950s convertible parked in the cracked lot. Numbered rooms 12 and 13 recede along a concrete walk, each door lit by a small globe lamp. Composition is wide and cinematic, the sign anchoring the right third while the car and office occupy the left. Color is split between cool twilight blues and the amber of neon and porch lights. A saguaro and distant mountains sit on the far left; empty asphalt and a faint highway glow occupy the right. The mood is lonely, mid-century Americana—Edward Hopper by way of Route 66—quiet, slightly melancholic, and sharply observed.
