Orvane Cliffs Funicular Poster

A vintage travel poster announces Orvane as the place where white chalk cliffs meet a turquoise sea. Towering geometric Art Deco capitals spell ORVANE across a graded teal sky; a smaller line of spaced capitals sits beneath, and a narrow sans-serif band at the foot promises a daily funicular from the harbor. Sheer cream-and-white cliffs drop into calm water, an arched sea stack catching long afternoon shadows. Two bright coral-red funicular cars climb a steep track cut into the cliff face, their windows catching the light. A tiny lighthouse and a scatter of gulls occupy the grassy headland. The composition balances a vast empty sky against the vertical drama of cliff and railway. Flat lithographic blocks of teal, coral, cream, and navy sit on slightly worn paper edges, with a soft grain that recalls stone lithography. Lighting is even and late-day, stretching shadows across the cliff and water without harsh contrast. The palette is restrained yet vivid: cool sea and sky against warm red cars and sunlit chalk. Mood is optimistic and slightly nostalgic, the invitation of interwar seaside travel. Style references include 1920s–30s railway and tourism posters, Cassandre’s geometric lettering, and the simplified planes of Art Deco landscape lithographs. The result is both promotional and pictorial, a destination distilled into type, color, and a single dramatic incline.
