Artbreeder alternative
Artbreeder alternative: breed two characters into one, then make it move
Pixel Dojo blends characters by handing two portraits to Nano Banana 2.1 as references, stages the result in any scene and animates it on Seedance 2.5, so the blend of two ideas becomes a full character in a few credits.
Artbreeder made breeding images famous: pick two parents, slide the genes, get a new face. We wanted to see how that idea feels with today's reference models, so we painted two parents and bred them in plain words.
1 credit ($0.06) per image at 1K. Included in every plan, from $10/month.

How we bred a new character in four steps
- 1
Paint the parents
Nano Banana 2.1 painted a forest warden with green braids and a clockwork tinker with a copper beard and brass monocle, both in oil paint style.
- 2
Breed them
We gave both portraits to Nano Banana 2.1 as references and named which traits each parent passes on.
- 3
Put the blend in a scene
The blend portrait became the only reference for a full body scene at a workbench in the roots of a giant tree.
- 4
Bring it to life
Seedance 2.5 used the blend portrait as its first frame and added motion and sound.
Every generation in the family tree
The actual outputs of the four steps above, in order. Each tile shows what it cost.

Painted fantasy character portrait of a forest warden, a woman in her forties with moss green braided hair, amber eyes, faint bark textured freckles across her cheekbones and a cloak of layered leaves, dark forest backdrop, oil painting brushwork, head and shoulders.

Painted fantasy character portrait of a clockwork tinker, a man in his fifties with a copper beard, a brass monocle over one grey eye, a leather apron with tiny gears pinned to it and soot on his cheek, warm workshop backdrop, oil painting brushwork, head and shoulders.

Blend the two reference characters into one new original character, a person in their late forties: the green braided hair and amber eyes of the first, the copper beard stubble, soot smudges and brass monocle of the second, a leaf cloak pinned with small brass gears, oil painting brushwork, head and shoulders, a backdrop half forest and half workshop.

Use the reference image as the character. The same person with green braids, brass monocle and leaf cloak with gears, full body, repairs a small brass clockwork bird at a workbench built into the roots of a giant tree, lanterns and hanging tools around, fireflies, oil painting brushwork, warm and green light.
The painted character slowly turns toward the camera, adjusts the brass monocle with one hand and gives a small knowing smile, leaves on the cloak stir in a light breeze, the oil painting look stays the same. Sound: rustling leaves and a faint clockwork ticking.
- The blend took exactly the traits we named: the warden's green braids and leaf cloak, the tinker's brass monocle, copper stubble and gears.
- In the workshop scene the braids, monocle and gear pinned cloak all held, from one reference and no training.
- Seedance 2.5 kept the oil painting texture while the character turned and moved, with sound built in.
- Each still cost 1.5 credits, so a whole family tree of parents, blends and scenes costs a few credits.

Tips for breeding characters with prompts
Name the traits per parent
Say which parent gives the hair, which gives the eyes and which gives the props. Vague blends drift toward one parent.
Keep the parents in one style
Two portraits in the same medium and framing blend cleanly. Mixing a photo with a painting splits the look.
Save the blend before you scene it
Put the blend in Character Studio, then call it by @name for every new scene and clip.
When Artbreeder is the better pick
Artbreeder is a playful community. Its gene sliders let you nudge a face a little at a time, public images can be bred by anyone, and Wikipedia lists its content license as CC0. Its pricing page lists unlimited image generation in Composer on every paid plan.
If you want the newest image models, video from the same characters and commercial use on every plan, we think Pixel Dojo carries the idea further.
