Pixlr alternative

Pixlr alternative: generate, expand, recolor and animate one photo

Pixel Dojo runs fast and premium image models side by side, then expands, edits and animates the result on the same plan, with each step's price shown before you click.

Pixlr pairs a browser photo editor with an AI image generator. We took one golden hour scene through four generators, then did what Pixlr users do next: widened it, changed a color and brought it to life.

20 credits ($1.25) per 5 s clip with audio. Included in every plan, from $10/month.

The woman finishes pouring, lifts the steaming cup and takes a slow sip while looking out over the ocean, waves roll in far below, her hair moves in the sea breeze, the camera slowly arcs to the side. Sound: wind, distant surf and the clink of the thermos cap.

  • What is Pixlr?

Pixlr's generator page lists Flux Schnell, Flux Dev, Flux Dev Ultra, Stable Diffusion XL and Nano Banana 2.

  • What does Pixlr cost?

Pixlr lists Plus at $2.49 a month with 80 AI credits, Premium at $9.99 with 1,000 and Ultra from $24.99 with up to 10,000, about 20% less when paid yearly.

The edits we made to the winning photo

Every step below starts from the Nano Banana 2.1 image in the test. Tap one to start from the same prompt.

The cliff road scene widened on both sides to show more coastline, road and bluffs

Image Outpainting added 320 pixels on each side for 1 credit, the job Pixlr calls generative expand.

Continue the cliff road and the coastline on both sides: more of the winding road, grassy bluffs and the surf beach below, same golden hour haze.

Qwen Image 2 Edit changed only the paint, for 0.5 credits. The woman, the road and the light stayed put.

Change the motorcycle and the sidecar paint from green to deep burgundy red with cream pinstripes. Keep everything else exactly the same: the woman, the thermos, the cliff road, the ocean and the golden light.

Kling 3.0 animated the still for 5 seconds with wind and surf in the sound track, 20 credits.

One golden hour brief on four generators

We picked engines that line up with Pixlr's menu, from a fast model to a premium one: Z-Image Turbo, Flux 2 Dev, Nano Banana 2.1 and Seedream 5. Same prompt on all four; each tile shows its credits.

Z-Image Turbo: a woman pours coffee beside a mint green motorcycle with a sidecar above a surf beach

Golden hour photograph of a woman in her thirties pouring coffee from a steel thermos beside a vintage green motorcycle with a sidecar, parked on a cliff road above a surf beach, waves rolling in below, warm haze and long shadows, 35mm lens, natural color.

  • Z-Image Turbo made a bright, pastel version with a mint green sidecar for 0.25 credits, our pick for quick drafts.
  • Flux 2 Dev went closest and haziest, with the bike filling the frame, for 1 credit.
  • Nano Banana 2.1 showed the whole story, the winding road, the bluffs and the surf, for 1 credit. We edited and animated that one.
  • Seedream 5 caught the coffee mid pour into the cup with the cleanest beach and waves.

When Pixlr is the better pick

Pixlr is a photo editor first, with a library of fonts, templates, elements and animations on Premium, and Pixlr Mobile and Desktop apps. If you mostly retouch your own photos and only sometimes generate one, Pixlr Plus at $2.49 a month is hard to beat on price.

If AI generation and video are the main event, we think a studio built around many models gives you more for each credit.

Deep dive: expand, recolor and animate without leaving the tab

Pixlr users know Generative Expand and Generative Fill. Our matching steps are Image Outpainting, which adds canvas on any side and fills it from a prompt, and prompt based editors like Qwen Image 2 Edit and Nano Banana Edit, which change one thing and keep the rest.

We widened the Nano Banana 2.1 photo by 320 pixels on each side and asked for more coastline. Then we asked Qwen Image 2 Edit to repaint the bike burgundy and leave everything else alone. It did, down to the light on her jacket.

Last, we handed the original still to Kling 3.0 as a start frame. She lifts the cup and sips while the surf rolls in, with wind in the sound track. Each of those steps lists its own price in the showcase above.

What our Pixlr test cost

Plans are Lite $10 a month for 160 credits, Pro $25 for 500 credits, Pro Max $50 for 1,100 credits. Every plan includes every model and commercial use.

The four images cost 0.25, 1, 1 and 2.5 credits. The outpaint cost 1 credit, the recolor 0.5 credits and the 5 second Kling 3.0 clip 20 credits.

Under our refund policy, a first purchase can be refunded within 7 days, in full if under 20% of the credits are used and pro-rated after that.
